It Is Proposed to Prohibit Presence or Alienation of Single-Use Tableware and Containers Made of Plastic or Foam Plastic

With the package of drafts, it is proposed to prohibit the presence or alienation of polyethylene bags and pouches, single-use containers and tableware made of plastic or foam plastic: plates, cups, spoons, forks, knives, sticks for drinking or stirring, in trade, public catering facilities, places of trade, mobile trade points, fairs, exhibitions and sales, as well as in the case of outdoor trade, from January 1, 2027.
This was stated by Ara Mkrtchyan, Deputy Minister of Environment of the RA presenting the legislative package providing for addenda and amendments to the RA Code on Administrative Offenses, the Laws on Trade and Services and on Market Control at the sitting on January 14 of the NA Standing Committee on Territorial Administration, Local Self-Government, Agriculture and Environment Protection for debate.
The Deputy Minister informed that the garbage bags used for weight packaging and produced from secondary raw materials are an exception. Liability has also been established for violating the ban. In case of the first violation, the Food Safety Inspection Body will issue a warning, and in case of the second and subsequent violations, a fine of 100-150 thousand drams is imposed. The rapporteur noted that control over violations has been entrusted to both the Market Surveillance Inspection Body and local self-government bodies jointly. Control in the form of observation has also been envisaged.
Limiting the use of single-use plastic in Armenia is not only an important environmental, but also a political and economic step, with which Armenia will present itself on the eve of COP 17 as a responsible state committed to the principles of sustainable development.
